Dental Prophylaxis Aka “A cleaning”

Good candidates for a dental prophylaxis are large dogs under 5 years of age or small dogs and cats under 3 years of age with no apparent dental disease.

A prophylaxis is for prevention of dental disease. General anesthesia, full mouth radiographs, cleaning, and charting of the teeth are performed as a housecall appointment.

Cost: $750-850

Grade 2

A grade 2 procedure includes xrays, cleaning, and treatment for 1-2 diseased teeth in an otherwise healthy mouth.

Good examples of a “grade 2” include a young dog or cat with a single fractured tooth. We don’t expect a lot of hidden disease in these patients (although sometimes we find some).

Cost: $1150-1400

Grade 3.jpg

Grade 3

A grade 3 procedure includes xrays, cleaning, and surgical removal of teeth as needed, with 5 or fewer extractions.

Many middle aged or older dogs and cats with apparently mild dental disease will be a grade 3. These pets are likely to have hidden disease, and most pets will need at least a few extractions because of hidden abscesses, resorption of teeth (like severe cavities), and disease under the gums.

Cost: $1300-1800

Grade 4

A grade 4 procedure includes xrays, cleaning, and treatment for numerous teeth in a mouth with significant dental disease.

Middle aged and older cats and older small breed dogs are our “classic” grade 4 patients. They need numerous extractions, heavy pain relief, and extra time and care.

Cost: $1500-2050

Grade 5

A grade 5 procedure includes xrays, cleaning, and extensive treatment and extractions requiring advanced skills. This grade includes more than 16 extractions and/or full quadrant extractions such as full mouth extractions for cats with stomatitis. Typical patients in the category are elderly small dogs with severe dental disease and no prior dental treatment.

Cost: $2000 - 2500
